Huntsville 2007 National Tour PDF Print E-mail

The Huntsville National Tour would pit me (and my late-addition co-driver) against the turbocharged rally cars. But the competitors would prove to be the least of my worries.

When John Thomas had to cancel at the last minute, his co-driver needed a ride. What a coincidence; I needed a good co-driver. Lance Coley strapped on the #97 and took a seat in the M3.

Saturday proved interesting. After Lance's first run, I noticed that we had a fast leak from the right rear tire; it was punctured. With no other option, we threw the regular street tires on the rear and made our runs.  Lance was unfamiliar with the limits of the car (and the fact that it had different rubber on either end of the car added to the learning curve) and struggled to put together a good run. I managed to stay within about half a second of the leader, Steven Kornhaus in his STi. We lived to fight another day.

It should be mentioned that Sandra, Lance's trooper of a girlfriend, took my tire up the road to get it patched while we were running. If not for her, who knows how we would have finished.

Sunday the rain held off (barely), but even with four good tires I couldn't put together a run fast enough to make up my roughly half-second deficit. I cut Steven's lead to three tenths of a second, but that was all I could manage. Lance had FTD for the class, but unfortunately ended up about a tenth of a second out of the trophies in fourth.

Despite our bad luck and some unremarkable driving, the weekend was still a success. And congratulations to Brian Whitmire for taking home two 1st place BSP trophies in three weeks (Houston and Huntsville Tours).

Huntsville results can be found here .
